Dentrix vs Dentrix Ascend
1 of 6
Quick verdict
Dentrix Ascend suits a practice that wants to stop running an office server, uses Macs or iPads, or has more than one location. Dentrix suits a practice whose Windows server and IT support already work well.
Henry Schein One stopped supporting new Dentrix installs on Windows 10 after June 30, 2026. If your workstations or server are due for replacement, price Ascend against the cost of that Dentrix hardware refresh before you buy anything.
Server or cloud
Both products come from Henry Schein One and share the Dentrix name. They differ in where the software runs.
Dentrix is installed on a server in your office and on Windows workstations. Workstations need Windows 10 or 11, and the server needs Windows Server 2016 to 2025. The server hardware and its backups are your responsibility or your IT company’s.
Dentrix Ascend runs in a web browser on Windows or macOS, or on an iPad. Henry Schein One hosts it, so there is no server to buy or patch. Capterra reviewers list remote access without a server among its strengths.
What each costs
Neither product has a public price list. The figures below come from third-party articles and listings, and those articles give no source for their numbers. Treat them as a starting point for a quote conversation.
Desktop Dentrix is estimated at a one-time license of $5,000 to $10,000, plus $100 to $300 a month for the support plan. Support, updates and Dentrix Imaging come through Connected Care Essentials, an annual plan billed monthly. Electronic claims are a separate eService with a $15 minimum monthly bill; the per-claim rate is set on your order form.
Dentrix Ascend is estimated at $500 to $1,200 a month. One pricing listing shows $4,788 a year for a single user, $9,588 for 10 users and $19,188 for 100 users. Ascend is sold in three packages: Essentials includes payments, claims processing, patient booking, and text and email messaging; Pro adds Eligibility Pro checks and multi-location management; Accelerate adds enterprise reporting.
When you compare quotes, compare five-year totals. The Dentrix license is a large one-time cost, and you cannot resell it later. A Dentrix license can only move with a full practice sale, which requires a transfer fee and written permission from Henry Schein One. Our cost calculator totals five years side by side once you have real numbers.
Contracts and cancelling
Dentrix Ascend starts with a 12-month term and renews for further 12-month terms at the fees in effect at renewal. Henry Schein One can change those fees with notice by email or an in-product announcement. To leave, you must give written notice of non-renewal at least 60 days before the term ends. Leaving early can mean paying for the rest of the term, and prepaid fees are not refunded.
Desktop Dentrix eServices, such as eClaims, eligibility checks and online booking, follow nearly the same rules: 12-month terms that renew at then-current fees, 60 days’ written notice, and possible liability for the rest of the term if you leave early.
Put the renewal dates in your calendar at least 90 days out. Missing the 60-day window commits you to another year.
Getting your data out
Under the Ascend terms, when the agreement ends you can request read-only access and a copy of your data in SQL database format. Data you have not requested within 90 days can be deleted, and extending read-only access costs extra, so request the export before the term ends.
We could not find a published data export policy for desktop Dentrix. The database sits on your own server, so you hold the files, though using them in another system still requires a conversion.
Switching from Dentrix to Ascend
Moving within Henry Schein One still means a data conversion, and the company does not publish what a Dentrix to Ascend conversion costs, how long it takes, or which records come across. Capterra reviewers of Ascend mention slow insurance setup and data conversion.
Before you sign, get these answers in writing:
- What the conversion costs and whether it is included in the first-year price.
- Which records convert: patient history, ledger, insurance plans, clinical notes, perio charts and images.
- How long your desktop Dentrix and eServices contracts still run, so you are not paying for both.
- What training is included for the front desk, since insurance workflows are where reviewers report friction.
Imaging and features
Both products include imaging. Dentrix Imaging handles 2D, 3D CAD/CAM and 3D CBCT in one application, works with more than 150 devices, and Henry Schein One says it carries no extra fees. Ascend includes 2D, 3D CBCT and CAD/CAM imaging as well.
Ascend has been adding clinical features: orthodontic workflows, Voice Perio and expanded Eligibility Pro arrived in June 2026. For desktop Dentrix, claims, eligibility and online booking are eServices sold on their own terms.
On review sites, Dentrix holds 4.3 out of 5 from 378 Capterra reviews and Ascend holds 4.1 from 235. Dentrix reviewers praise easy navigation and broad office management tools and complain about slow, inconsistent support and updates that introduce bugs. Ascend reviewers praise multi-location management and the interface and complain about confusing reporting and long waits for support.
Who should pick which
Pick Dentrix Ascend if you:
- Want to stop buying and maintaining an office server.
- Use Macs or iPads, or want to work from home.
- Run, or plan to run, more than one location.
Stay on Dentrix if you:
- Have a server and Windows workstations that meet current requirements.
- Have an IT company that already supports your setup.
- Want your database on hardware you control.

Capability rows cover the base product or cheapest plan, and each one links the page that claim came from. "Paid add-on" and "higher tier only" mean the vendor sells it separately or puts it in a pricier package. "Unclear" with a source means we read that page and could not establish an answer; "Unclear" with no record means we have not checked that capability on that product. Neither one says the product lacks it. 8 of the 18 capabilities we track are not yet checked on either product, so they have no row here.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Dentrix and Dentrix Ascend?
Both come from Henry Schein One. Dentrix is Windows software installed on a server in your office. Dentrix Ascend is cloud software that runs in a web browser on Windows or macOS, or on an iPad, so there is no office server to maintain.
Is Dentrix Ascend cheaper than Dentrix?
Henry Schein One publishes prices for neither product, so there is no official answer. Third-party estimates put Dentrix at a license of $5,000 to $10,000 plus $100 to $300 a month for support, and Dentrix Ascend at $500 to $1,200 a month. None of those sources cite where the figures come from. Get written quotes for both.
Does Dentrix work on a Mac?
No. The current Dentrix system requirements list Windows 10 or 11 workstations and Windows Server 2016 through 2025, with no macOS support. Dentrix Ascend runs in a browser on macOS.
Can I move my data from Dentrix to Dentrix Ascend?
Henry Schein One does not publish what a Dentrix to Ascend conversion costs or which records carry over. Ask for both in writing before you sign, including insurance setup, which reviewers describe as slow.
What happens to my data if I cancel Dentrix Ascend?
The Ascend terms let you request read-only access and a copy of your data as a SQL database when the agreement ends. Data you have not requested within 90 days can be deleted, and keeping read-only access longer costs extra.
