Dentrix Ascend vs Dentrix Enterprise
0 of 2
Quick verdict
Dentrix Ascend fits a practice of any size that wants software in a browser, on Windows or Mac, with imaging built in and no server to run. It carries a 12-month term and a 60-day notice window.
Dentrix Enterprise fits a large group, DSO or community health center that wants every site on one central database and one patient record. It is Windows only, runs on servers, and its contract terms are mostly unrecorded.
Enterprise records only multi-location and DSO as practice sizes, so a solo dentist or small group has no reason to start there. A health center may want the central database and the medical-system links that Enterprise lists and Ascend’s record does not.
Two products from one vendor
Henry Schein One sells both. They are separate products for different customers, one hosted and one installed on servers.
Dentrix Ascend is cloud software. Its profile lists web, Windows, Mac and iOS as platforms, and general practice, orthodontics and DSO as specialties. Recorded practice sizes are startup, solo, small group, multi-location and DSO.
Dentrix Enterprise is Windows software that launched in 1999. Its profile lists general practice, multi-specialty, DSO and FQHC as specialties, and multi-location and DSO as the only sizes. Henry Schein One describes it as built for large group practices, DSOs, community health centers and institutions.
Neither one is plain Dentrix, which is a separate product. If you are weighing that too, read Dentrix vs Dentrix Ascend.
For install base, Henry Schein One says 80,000+ clinicians, office managers and office staff use Ascend, and gives no practice count. It publishes no install figure for Enterprise. The claim counts people, not offices, so it says little about how many practices run each product.
Cloud against server
Ascend needs no office server. Reviewers on Capterra cite remote access without a server as a reason they chose it.
Enterprise runs all sites on one central SQL Server database. It supports Citrix and Microsoft RemoteApp thin-client setups and virtual servers on VMware vSphere or Hyper-V, per Henry Schein One’s system requirements document.
Running Enterprise means someone administers the database, the virtual servers and the thin-client layer. Running Ascend means signing in.
Mac offices should note the split. Ascend lists macOS. Enterprise lists Windows as its only platform.
What each costs
Henry Schein One publishes no price for either product. Every figure below is a third-party estimate with no vendor confirmation.
For Ascend, PricingNow lists $4,788 a year for one user. The same page lists $9,588 a year for 10 users and $19,188 a year for 100 users. Wired for the Future estimates a monthly subscription of $500 to $1,200, and cites no source for the range. The two figures describe different pricing models, so do not combine them.
Ascend is sold in three packages: Essentials, Pro and Accelerate. Essentials includes payments, claims processing, patient booking, and text and email messaging. Pro adds Eligibility Pro checks and multi-location management. Accelerate adds enterprise reporting. Henry Schein One publishes no price for any of them.
For Enterprise, our record holds no figure from any source. Henry Schein One says pricing is by phone only. Service plans cover support, upgrades and training, and are sold to existing customers as yearly or monthly contracts.
Enterprise also sells claims, eligibility and ePrescribing as add-ons, with no published price for any of them.
On the data we hold, Ascend has the only number of the two, and it is an estimate. Put a written quote from Henry Schein One for each product into the cost calculator before you compare totals.
Contracts and cancelling
Ascend has a 12-month initial term. New licenses added to an existing subscription end on the same date as that subscription. It renews for 12-month terms at the then-current fees, and Henry Schein One can change fees on notice by email or in-product announcement.
Written notice of non-renewal is due at least 60 days before the term ends. Leaving early can mean paying the rest of the term. Prepaid fees are not refunded.
For Enterprise, the only recorded term is that service plans are sold to existing customers as yearly or monthly contracts. Our record has no renewal rule, notice period or early-termination fee. All three are unclear, which is different from none.
A group evaluating Enterprise should ask for the master agreement and each service plan in writing. Ask what the software license covers, since the plan only covers support, upgrades and training.
Getting your data out
Ascend states its export terms. When the agreement ends, the practice can request read-only access and a copy of its data in SQL database format. Data not requested within 90 days can be deleted. Extending read-only access costs extra, and Henry Schein One does not publish the amount.
For Enterprise, our record holds no export terms. Whether Henry Schein One provides an export process or charges for one is unclear. Ask before you sign.
Our record holds no conversion terms for either product. Reviewers of Ascend cite slow insurance setup and data conversion as a complaint, so ask for a conversion schedule in writing.
Features that are published
Ascend records texting, claims, online scheduling, ePrescribing and perio charting as included. Eligibility and online forms are unclear, which means the pages we checked did not settle them. The package descriptions do name Eligibility Pro checks in Pro, which suggests eligibility depends on the package.
Henry Schein One also added orthodontic workflows, Voice Perio and expanded Eligibility Pro to Ascend in June 2026.
Enterprise records perio charting, treatment presentation, an imaging bridge, recall automation, reporting and multi-location reporting as included. Claims, eligibility and ePrescribing are add-ons. Texting, online scheduling and online forms have no entry in our record, so they are unclear.
Reporting works differently on each. Enterprise’s centralized reporting pulls operations data from every site and breaks it down by provider or by site. The reports are written in Crystal, so a group can write its own. Ascend’s higher package adds enterprise reporting, and reviewers cite confusing, unreliable reporting.
One patient record and one provider record span every Enterprise site, so a patient can be seen anywhere in the group without a second chart. Enterprise also interoperates with 40+ medical systems. Our record lists no medical-system links for Ascend.
Imaging
Ascend has native imaging. Henry Schein One’s page covers imaging for 2D, 3D CBCT and CAD/CAM, built into the product.
Enterprise’s profile does not record native imaging either way. It lists DEXIS and MiPACS as integrations, and the imaging bridge is recorded as included. A group buying Enterprise should confirm which imaging software each site will run and what that costs separately.
Integrations
NexHealth lists Dentrix Ascend by Henry Schein and Dentrix Enterprise by Henry Schein among the systems it supports, in its “Is my system supported?” checker. Both are NexHealth’s claims, and NexHealth does not publish the connection method per system.
Our records hold no statement from Henry Schein One on NexHealth for either product. The silence settles nothing either way. We have no other integration records for either one.
What reviewers say
Ascend holds 4.1 out of 5 from 235 Capterra reviews. Reviewers cite multi-location management, remote access without a server, and an easy interface. They also cite confusing, unreliable reporting, long waits to reach support, and slow insurance setup and data conversion.
Enterprise holds 4.1 from 101 Capterra reviews. Reviewers cite a large feature set and easy claim creation and billing. They also cite a dated interface, tasks that need several open windows, unreliable appointment reminders, support waits and a learning curve.
Capterra sub-scores for Ascend are 3.9 for ease of use, 4.3 for customer service, 3.9 for features and 4 for value. For Enterprise they are 3.8, 4.1, 3.8 and 3.9. All of them are third-party review scores. The overall rating is the same, and Ascend has more than twice as many reviews.
Who should pick which
Pick Dentrix Ascend if you:
- Want a browser-based system on Windows or Mac, or on an iPad.
- Run a startup, solo, small-group or multi-location practice.
- Want imaging built in.
- Can accept a 12-month term with 60 days’ notice and an unpublished price.
Pick Dentrix Enterprise if you:
- Run a large group, DSO or community health center.
- Want every site on one central SQL Server database and one patient record.
- Need links to medical systems.
- Have IT staff to run the servers, and can get the contract in writing.
The two products rarely compete for the same buyer. A multi-location group that wants the cloud and can live with Ascend’s reporting should start there. A health center that needs a shared record and medical-system links should start with Enterprise.

Capability rows cover the base product or cheapest plan, and each one links the page that claim came from. "Paid add-on" and "higher tier only" mean the vendor sells it separately or puts it in a pricier package. "Unclear" with a source means we read that page and could not establish an answer; "Unclear" with no record means we have not checked that capability on that product. Neither one says the product lacks it. 6 of the 18 capabilities we track are not yet checked on either product, so they have no row here.
