Quick verdict

CareStack fits a practice that wants a published starting price, a 30-day notice window and eligibility, claims, texting and imaging in the base plan. It also lists more specialties than Dentrix Ascend: pediatric, oral surgery, periodontics and endodontics, as well as general and orthodontics.

Dentrix Ascend fits a practice already inside the Henry Schein One family, or one that wants a package ladder with multi-location management and enterprise reporting at the upper tiers. Plan on getting its price in writing, because none is published.

Two cloud systems, two ways of selling

Both run in a browser with no office server to buy or patch. Dentrix Ascend also runs on macOS and on an iPad. CareStack lists the web as its only platform.

CareStack sells two tiers with public starting prices. Essentials covers native imaging, eligibility checks, claims, texting, email, online appointments and a patient portal. Intelligence adds clinical notes, voice perio charting, X-ray analysis and clinical diagnosis, all done by AI.

Dentrix Ascend, from Henry Schein One, sells three packages: Essentials, Pro and Accelerate. Essentials includes payments, claims processing, patient booking, and text and email messaging. Pro adds Eligibility Pro checks and multi-location management. Accelerate adds enterprise reporting. Henry Schein One added orthodontic workflows, Voice Perio and expanded Eligibility Pro in June 2026.

What each costs

CareStack’s Essentials plan starts at $829 a month, and Intelligence starts at $1,299 a month. Both are starting prices. CareStack says the final figure depends on locations, chairs and providers, and that licenses are set by locations and providers, so adding staff users does not add licenses. It does not charge for using integrated third-party apps.

CareStack may also charge an implementation fee “in certain cases”, depending on data migration complexity and extra training. It publishes no amount.

Henry Schein One publishes no Dentrix Ascend price. Two third-party sources give figures, and the labels matter. One site lists $4,788 a year for a single user, with $9,588 a year for 10 users and $19,188 a year for 100 users. Another estimates $500 to $1,200 a month and cites no source. Treat both as estimates for a first conversation, not as quotes.

Today that means a published $829 against an unpublished number. Once you have a written Ascend quote, run both through the cost calculator with your own provider and location count.

Contracts and cancelling

CareStack’s initial term is set on each Order Form and renews automatically for successive one-year periods. Non-renewal needs 30 days’ notice before the term ends. The standard terms also let either party terminate at any time, with or without cause, on 30 days’ notice.

Dentrix Ascend runs a 12-month initial term. New licenses added to an existing subscription end on the same date as that subscription. It renews for 12-month terms at the then-current fees, and Henry Schein One can change those fees on notice by email or in-product announcement.

Written notice of non-renewal is due at least 60 days before the term ends. Leaving early can mean paying the rest of the term, and prepaid fees are not refunded.

Ascend’s notice window is 30 days longer than CareStack’s, so the deadline falls earlier. Missing it means another full year, so calendar the date the week you sign.

Getting your data out

CareStack will help export a file of your data during the term and for up to 90 days after it expires. The format is CareStack’s choice. You request it 10 days ahead, pay CareStack’s then-current hourly rates, and the delivery target is 15 days. No flat export fee is published.

Dentrix Ascend handles export at the end of the agreement. The practice can request read-only access and a copy of its data in SQL database format. Data not requested within 90 days can be deleted, and extending read-only access costs extra.

The two differ in timing. CareStack’s process runs during the term, so you can test it before you need it. Ascend’s process starts after the agreement ends and gives you a 90-day window to ask. If you ever leave, put the request on the calendar the day notice goes out.

Switching in

CareStack says it has converted data from more than 60 practice management systems and tests with a sandbox before final migration. No conversion price is published, and the implementation fee mentioned above may apply.

Henry Schein One publishes no Dentrix Ascend conversion price or timeline in the record we hold. Capterra reviewers of Ascend cite slow insurance setup and data conversion. That complaint is worth putting to a sales rep directly, with a date in writing.

Features and integrations

Each feature below is as the vendor records it, checked 2026-09-26 or later.

Both record texting, claims, online scheduling and perio charting as included. Eligibility checks are included in CareStack’s Essentials plan, while Dentrix Ascend’s record is unclear, since Eligibility Pro is listed as an addition to the Pro package. Unclear is not the same as none, so ask Henry Schein One which package carries eligibility for your practice.

E-prescribing differs. Dentrix Ascend lists it as included. CareStack lists it as an add-on. Online forms are unclear on both sides.

On integrations, CareStack names RingCentral among its phone integrations, giving call pop and outbound calling, per CareStack’s own phone integrations page. NexHealth lists CareStack and lists Dentrix Ascend by Henry Schein among the systems it supports, per NexHealth’s own integrations page. Neither CareStack nor Henry Schein One was the source of the NexHealth entry, and NexHealth does not publish the connection method for either. The Ascend record carries no RingCentral entry, which does not mean the two do not work together.

What reviewers say

On Capterra, CareStack holds 4.8 from 219 reviews. Dentrix Ascend holds 4.1 from 235 reviews. Both are third-party figures, not vendor claims, and they come from different reviewer pools.

CareStack’s subscores run 4.5 for ease of use, 4.8 for customer service, 4.7 for features and 4.7 for value. Dentrix Ascend’s run 3.9, 4.3, 3.9 and 4 in the same order.

Reviewers of CareStack cite detailed reporting and KPI tracking, one system for scheduling, billing, charting and patient messages, and responsive chat support. They complain about too many steps to post insurance payments, a learning curve for navigation and report setup, limited dashboard customization and slow replies on non-urgent tickets.

Reviewers of Dentrix Ascend cite multi-location management, remote access without a server and an easy interface. They complain about confusing, unreliable reporting, long waits to reach support, and slow insurance setup and data conversion.

On scale, CareStack claims more than 3,000 practices. Henry Schein One claims 80,000+ clinicians, office managers and office staff use Ascend, with no practice count given. Those two claims count different things and cannot be compared directly.

Capability rows cover the base product or cheapest plan, and each one links the page that claim came from. "Paid add-on" and "higher tier only" mean the vendor sells it separately or puts it in a pricier package. "Unclear" with a source means we read that page and could not establish an answer; "Unclear" with no record means we have not checked that capability on that product. Neither one says the product lacks it. 9 of the 18 capabilities we track are not yet checked on either product, so they have no row here.
