Quick verdict

Denticon fits a practice or group that wants cloud software with a stated starting price. It records online scheduling, forms, texting, eligibility checks, claims and multi-location reporting as included, and it has an API. The cost to plan for is leaving: $995 per extract for imaging data.

Dentrix fits a practice that already runs it, or that wants the database on its own server. Its prices are not published, claims are sold as an add-on, and many patient-facing features are unclear in our record.

Neither suits a Mac office, for different reasons. Dentrix needs Windows on every workstation and a Windows server. Denticon runs in a browser, but Planet DDS says it is not compatible with macOS.

Cloud against server

Denticon is cloud practice management software from Planet DDS. Its profile lists web and Windows as platforms, and general practice, multi-specialty and DSO as specialties. Planet DDS says it is not compatible with macOS. Practice sizes recorded are solo, small group, multi-location and DSO.

Dentrix is Windows software from Henry Schein One, installed on an office server. Its profile lists general practice as the specialty and solo, small group and multi-location as sizes. Workstations need Windows 10 or 11 and servers need Windows Server 2016 to 2025. Henry Schein One stopped supporting new installs on Windows 10 after June 30, 2026.

Dentrix means buying and maintaining a server. Denticon does not.

Planet DDS says it serves 14,500 practices and 175,000 users across all its products, as of its DentalOS announcement on July 17, 2026, and publishes no Denticon-only figure. Dentrix’s vendor claim is 35,000+ practices. Both are vendor claims, and they count different things.

What each costs

Denticon is the only one of the two with a vendor-published price. Planet DDS lists a starting price of $795 a month, and says packages, features and add-ons vary with practice size. Capterra lists $750 a month as a flat-rate starting price. That one is a third-party figure, and it differs from the vendor’s own number, so we use $795.

Dentrix publishes no price. The estimates available are all third-party:

The license-plus-support estimate and the monthly starting price describe different pricing models and should not be added together.

Add-ons are separate lines on both sides. Denticon charges $20 a month per account for a text messaging compliance fee, and $0.0087 per 160-character segment above the per-office package. Patient Communication includes 6,000 segments per office and two-way texting 3,000. Dentrix’s confirmed add-on is the eClaims minimum of $15 a month, starting in the first full month after 60 days from signing, with the per-claim rate set on the order form.

Put real quotes into the cost calculator for a five-year total.

Contracts and cancelling

Denticon’s initial term ends on the first anniversary of the billing start date, then renews for one-year terms. Planet DDS may adjust prices for each renewal term with written notice. Non-renewal needs at least 30 days’ notice before the term ends. Cancelling for convenience needs 60 days’ notice, and the fees for the rest of the current term become due immediately.

Dentrix works in two layers. Connected Care Essentials, which covers support, updates, Dentrix Imaging and in-product chat, is an annual plan billed monthly. The eServices subscriptions (eClaims, eligibility, online booking and others) start with a 12-month term and renew for 12-month terms at the then-current fees, which Henry Schein One can change on notice. Written notice of non-renewal is due at least 60 days before the term ends. Leaving early can mean paying the rest of the term, and fees are non-refundable.

Denticon has the shorter non-renewal window, 30 days against 60. Dentrix can have several subscriptions with their own dates, so a practice leaving it needs a list of every eServices term and when each one ends.

A Dentrix license also cannot be sold on its own. Transferring it needs a full practice sale, a transfer fee and written permission from Henry Schein One.

Getting your data out

For Denticon, the practice owns its data but must extract a copy itself before termination. Up to 10 business days after termination it can ask Planet DDS to post the data to a secure site, which stays available for 30 days. Exporting XVWeb patient and imaging data costs $995 per extract, and imaging data converted during the first term cannot be exported before that term ends. Extra export work is billed at current rates.

For Dentrix, our record holds no export terms, so export is unclear and the cost is unknown. Ask Henry Schein One for the process and price in writing before you sign.

Coming in, Denticon converts data per location from supported legacy systems, with a trial conversion and audits before go-live. Imaging conversions are included per location, per database. Conversion fees are set in the order and not published. Our record has no conversion terms for Dentrix.

Features that are published

Denticon records these as included: perio charting, treatment presentation, texting, recall automation, online scheduling, online forms, eligibility checks, claims, reporting, multi-location reporting and API access. Planet DDS also says it has API integrations with more than 50 third-party products.

Dentrix records perio charting, reporting and multi-location reporting as included. Claims are an add-on through eClaims. Texting, eligibility, online forms, online scheduling and a mobile app are unclear, which means the pages we checked did not settle them. The eServices terms do name eligibility and online booking as subscriptions, which suggests they are sold separately.

Imaging

Dentrix Imaging handles 2D, 3D CAD/CAM and 3D CBCT in one application, works with 150+ devices and has no extra fees, per Dentrix’s imaging page.

Denticon’s profile does not record native imaging either way. It lists Apteryx XVWeb, a Planet DDS product, as the integration. DentalOS, launched July 17, 2026, links Denticon, Cloud 9 and Apteryx imaging on one data layer at no added cost to Planet DDS customers. The $995 export fee above applies to that imaging data.

Integrations

NexHealth lists Denticon by Planet DDS and Dentrix by Henry Schein among the systems it supports, in its “Is my system supported?” checker. Both are NexHealth’s claims, and NexHealth does not publish the connection method per system. Our records hold no statement from Planet DDS or Henry Schein One on the same point.

What reviewers say

Denticon holds 4.5 out of 5 from 118 Capterra reviews. Reviewers like logging in from anywhere and running several locations from one system. They cite slow or unresolved support tickets, too many clicks, bugs shipped in updates and a dated interface.

Dentrix holds 4.3 from 378 Capterra reviews. Reviewers cite easy navigation and broad office management tools. They also cite slow, inconsistent support, frequent bugs, and updates that introduce new glitches.

Capterra sub-scores for Denticon are 4.5 for ease of use, 4.3 for customer service, 4.5 for features and 4.4 for value. For Dentrix they are 4.2, 4.1, 4.2 and 4. These are third-party review scores, and Dentrix has more than three times as many reviews.

A practice with no server and more than one location gets the cleaner picture from Denticon on the data we hold. A practice staying on Dentrix should write down each eServices renewal date. The Find my PMS quiz scores both against your specialty, size and budget.

Vendor-claimed users 14,500 practices and 175,000 users across all Planet DDS products, as of the DentalOS launch announcement, July 17, 2026 (vendor claim). Planet DDS does not publish a Denticon-only install base figure separate from company-wide totals. Vendor-published at planetdds.com · checked Sep 26, 2026 35,000+ practices (vendor claim). Vendor-published at dentrix.com · checked Sep 26, 2026

Capability rows cover the base product or cheapest plan, and each one links the page that claim came from. "Paid add-on" and "higher tier only" mean the vendor sells it separately or puts it in a pricier package. "Unclear" with a source means we read that page and could not establish an answer; "Unclear" with no record means we have not checked that capability on that product. Neither one says the product lacks it. 6 of the 18 capabilities we track are not yet checked on either product, so they have no row here.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Denticon and Dentrix?

Denticon, from Planet DDS, is cloud software with a published starting price of $795 a month. Dentrix, from Henry Schein One, is installed on an office server and publishes no price. Both run on Windows only, and neither lists macOS support.

How much does Denticon cost compared with Dentrix?

Planet DDS lists a starting price of $795 a month for Denticon, and a Capterra listing shows $750 a month. Dentrix publishes nothing. Third-party estimates for Dentrix are a $5,000 to $10,000 license plus $100 to $300 a month for support, and a $500 a month starting price on SelectHub. Those are estimates with no cited source.

How much notice do I need to leave Denticon or Dentrix?

Denticon needs at least 30 days' notice not to renew its one-year term. Cancelling for convenience needs 60 days' notice, and the fees for the rest of the term become due immediately. Dentrix eServices subscriptions need written notice of non-renewal at least 60 days before a 12-month term ends.

What does it cost to export imaging data from Denticon?

Planet DDS charges $995 per extract to export XVWeb patient and imaging data at termination. Imaging data converted during the first term cannot be exported before that term ends. Dentrix's profile records no export fee, and also no export terms, so that is unclear.

Do Denticon and Dentrix both work with NexHealth?

NexHealth lists both Denticon by Planet DDS and Dentrix by Henry Schein among the systems it supports. The claim comes from NexHealth, which does not publish the connection method per system.
