Quick verdict

Pick Oryx if you are opening a practice, want a published price for each tier, want a contract that goes month-to-month after year one, or practice a specialty such as pediatrics, orthodontics, oral surgery or periodontics. Oryx is also the one with a stated data export that covers images and DICOM files at no listed fee.

Pick Denticon if you run several locations or a DSO, need reporting across them, or want a vendor with a long list of API partners. Denticon is recorded for general, multi-specialty and DSO use, and it lists multi-location reporting and API access as included. Expect to pay for that scale: a $795 a month starting price, a one-year auto-renewing term, and a $995 charge per imaging export when you leave.

Both run in the cloud. Denticon needs Windows. Oryx has 2 providers in each plan, and Denticon does not publish a provider count.

Price

Oryx publishes three plans, each with up to 2 providers:

Additional providers cost $100 a month each on Pro or Automate and $200 a month each on AI. For new customers, Oryx says payments on Pro start 3 months after signup.

Denticon publishes one figure. Its starting price is $795 a month, and Planet DDS says packages, features and add-ons vary with practice size. Capterra lists a flat-rate starting price of $750 a month. That is a third-party number and differs from the vendor’s, so treat it as an estimate and use $795 for planning.

The comparison is lopsided. For a practice with 2 providers or fewer, Oryx Pro at $650 is the lowest published figure on either side. Denticon’s $795 is a floor, and we cannot tell you what a given office pays above it. On Oryx you can work out the cost of extra providers from the list: $100 a month each on Pro. On Denticon that number has to come from a quote. Our cost calculator runs the Oryx side with your provider count.

Denticon also lists two texting fees. Text segments above the per-office package cost $0.0087 per 160-character segment, and a compliance fee of $20 a month applies per account. These are add-ons and not part of the starting price.

New-practice rates

Oryx charges $0 a month on Pro or Automate for new practices with up to 2 providers, plus a $1 setup fee. The regular price starts at 200 patients or 12 months after signup, whichever comes first. A separate AI startup offer is $400 a month with the same $1 setup fee and limit, and it includes AI annotations and eScript.

We record no new-practice rate for Denticon. If you are opening a practice, that decides much of this comparison.

Setup and conversion fees

Oryx says a setup fee, a data-conversion fee and an image-conversion fee all apply to offices switching from other software. Sales quotes the amounts.

Denticon converts data per location from supported legacy systems, with a trial conversion and audits before go-live. Imaging conversions are included per location, per database. Fees are set in the order and not published.

Neither vendor gives you a conversion number before you talk to sales. Ask for it in writing, per location, before you compare totals.

Contracts and cancelling

Oryx publishes a 12-month initial contract, then month-to-month. Its pricing page states no notice period and no early-termination terms, so read the agreement before you sign.

Denticon’s initial term ends on the first anniversary of the billing start date. It then renews for successive one-year terms unless the order says otherwise. Planet DDS may adjust prices for each renewal term with written notice.

The notice terms matter more here:

A missed 30-day window means another year. On Oryx, after the first 12 months, the contract is month-to-month. A practice that is unsure about a long commitment has more room on Oryx, and a multi-location group that wants stable pricing may not mind Denticon’s yearly term. Planet DDS’s source is its SaaS agreement, checked 2026-09-26.

Our contracts and exit fees guide compares notice periods across the whole market.

Getting your data out

Oryx says an export can be requested at any time or at termination. Structured data comes as CSV. Documents, images, radiographs and DICOM files come in their original formats. Oryx says it does not delete data at termination until the practice has had time to export, and it states no export fee. The source is Oryx’s FAQ page, checked 2026-09-26.

Denticon’s agreement says the practice owns its data but must extract a copy itself before termination. It can ask Planet DDS, up to 10 business days after termination, to post the data to a secure site available for 30 days. XVWeb imaging exports cost $995 per extract, and extra export work is billed at current rates. Imaging data converted during the first term cannot be exported before that term ends.

That $995 is an exit fee. It is not part of what you pay while using the system, and the per-extract wording means a group with several imaging databases could pay it more than once. We do not know how Planet DDS counts an extract for a multi-location group, so ask.

Features

Both list these as included, according to their own pages: texting, eligibility checks, claims, online forms, online scheduling and reporting.

Where they differ:

Imaging and AI integrations

Oryx builds its own imaging. It states that diagnostic software from Pearl and from Overjet sits directly inside that imaging. That is the vendor’s own statement, checked 2026-10-02. The pricing page lists imaging integration under the $1,399 plan, so ask which plan carries the Pearl and Overjet readings before you assume they come with Pro.

Denticon has no native imaging in our record. It lists Apteryx XVWeb, from Planet DDS. In July 2026 Planet DDS launched DentalOS, which it says links Denticon, Cloud 9 and Apteryx imaging on one data layer at no added cost to its customers. We hold no Pearl or Overjet record for Denticon, so that link is unclear. We do not claim it is absent.

On the practice-tools side, NexHealth lists Denticon by Planet DDS among the systems it supports. NexHealth does not publish the connection method per system, and we hold no NexHealth record for Oryx. Denticon is the only one of the two with a NexHealth link on file.

Reviews and track record

Denticon has 118 Capterra reviews and a 4.5 score. Both figures come from a third party, so treat them as estimates. Oryx has no rating record in our data.

The table says nothing about Oryx quality. Ask Oryx for customer references.

Reviewers like logging in from anywhere and running several locations from one system. Their complaints are slow or unresolved support tickets, too many clicks, bugs shipped in updates and a dated interface.

On company size, both vendors publish their own claims. Planet DDS says 14,500 practices and 175,000 users across all of its products, as of July 17, 2026. It does not publish a Denticon-only figure. Oryx says 15,000+ clinicians and more than 2,500 practices, and says it is self-funded. Oryx was founded in 2016. Neither claim is audited.

Oryx also runs an ambassador program that pays current users credit for referrals and reference calls, so a referral from an Oryx user may come with a payment.

Vendor-claimed users 14,500 practices and 175,000 users across all Planet DDS products, as of the DentalOS launch announcement, July 17, 2026 (vendor claim). Planet DDS does not publish a Denticon-only install base figure separate from company-wide totals. Vendor-published at planetdds.com · checked Sep 26, 2026 Oryx claims 15,000+ clinicians and more than 2,500 practices across five continents. The company says it is self-funded. Capability rows cover the base product or cheapest plan, and each one links the page that claim came from. "Paid add-on" and "higher tier only" mean the vendor sells it separately or puts it in a pricier package. "Unclear" with a source means we read that page and could not establish an answer; "Unclear" with no record means we have not checked that capability on that product. Neither one says the product lacks it. 6 of the 18 capabilities we track are not yet checked on either product, so they have no row here.

Frequently asked questions

Is Denticon or Oryx cheaper?

Oryx has the lower entry price. Its Pro plan is $650 a month for up to 2 providers, and Automate is $899. Denticon publishes a starting price of $795 a month and says packages, features and add-ons vary with practice size. The two figures are not the same kind of price, because Oryx lists what each plan includes and Denticon lists only where it starts.

Which contract is easier to leave?

Oryx publishes a 12-month initial contract and then month-to-month. Denticon renews for successive one-year terms. Non-renewal needs at least 30 days' notice before the term ends, and cancelling for convenience needs 60 days' notice with the fees for the rest of the term due immediately. Oryx's pricing page states no notice period.

What does it cost to export my data?

Oryx states no export fee and says structured data comes as CSV, with images, radiographs and DICOM files in original formats. Denticon charges $995 per extract for XVWeb patient and imaging data at termination, and imaging data converted during the first term cannot be exported before that term ends.

Does Denticon or Oryx work on a Mac?

Oryx is recorded as a web product. Denticon runs in a browser on Windows only, and Planet DDS says it is not compatible with macOS. We hold no separate Mac record for Oryx, so confirm with Oryx before you buy Macs for the front desk.

Which one has AI imaging built in?

Oryx states that diagnostic AI from Pearl and from Overjet is built directly into its imaging, and its pricing page puts AI imaging integration in the $1,399 AI plan. Denticon has no native imaging in our record. It lists Apteryx XVWeb, which Planet DDS owns, and we have no Pearl or Overjet record for Denticon.
